Title: Template:Citation Style documentation/ref - freem URL Source: https://freemwiki.com/wiki/Template:Citation_Style_documentation/ref Published Time: Fri, 31 Jul 2026 13:23:22 GMT Markdown Content: [Jump to content](https://freemwiki.com/wiki/Template:Citation_Style_documentation/ref#bodyContent) From freem * **ref**: the citation's HTML anchor identifier, when different from its default. When set, `|ref=ID` generates an anchor with the given `ID` (the `id=` attribute in the citation's `` HTML tag). Setting `|ref=ID` identifies the template as a target and allows [wikilinking to full references](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citing_sources/Further_considerations#Wikilinks_to_full_references "wikipedia:Citing sources/Further considerations"), especially useful with short-form citations like [shortened notes](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citing_sources#Shortened_footnotes "wikipedia:Citing sources") and [parenthetical referencing](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parenthetical_referencing "wikipedia:Parenthetical referencing"). The default anchor ID is suitable for use with {{[sfn](https://freemwiki.com/index.php?title=Template:Sfn&action=edit&redlink=1 "Template:Sfn (page does not exist)")}} and {{[harv](https://freemwiki.com/wiki/Template:Harv "Template:Harv")}} templates. Since April 2020, the parameter / keyword pair `|ref=harv` has no special meaning; this deprecated setting should _not_ be used and may be removed from existing cs1|2 templates. To inhibit anchor ID creation, set `|ref=none`. Aliases: none. See [Template:Citation/doc §Anchors for Harvard referencing templates](https://freemwiki.com/wiki/Template:Citation/doc#Anchors_for_Harvard_referencing_templates "Template:Citation/doc").
