How to Assist a Bleeding Victim in the Absence of EMS

From freem

Assisting a bleeding victim can be a crucial step in saving their life, especially in the absence of Emergency Medical Services (EMS). Here are some steps you can take to assist a bleeding victim:

1. Assess the situation: Before rushing in to assist the victim, take a moment to assess the situation. Ensure your own safety first, and then assess the victim's condition. Determine the location and severity of the bleeding.

2. Apply pressure: Apply direct pressure to the wound with a clean cloth or bandage. If the wound is large, use both hands to apply pressure. Maintain pressure until help arrives.

3. Elevate the wound: If possible, elevate the wound above the heart to reduce blood flow to the area.

4. Use a tourniquet: If direct pressure does not stop the bleeding, consider using a tourniquet. A tourniquet should be used as a last resort, and only if the bleeding is severe and life-threatening. A tourniquet is a tight band that is wrapped around the limb above the wound, stopping blood flow to the area. If possible, mark the time the tourniquet was applied and communicate this information to medical professionals when they arrive.

5. Monitor the victim: While waiting for help to arrive, monitor the victim's condition. Reassure them and keep them calm. If the victim loses consciousness, monitor their breathing and perform CPR if necessary.

Remember, assisting a bleeding victim can be dangerous, especially if they have an infectious disease. Use personal protective equipment such as gloves, and wash your hands thoroughly after providing assistance.
