How to Acid Wash Aluminum

From freem

Acid washing is a process used to clean and brighten aluminum surfaces. It is commonly used on aluminum objects that have become dull or discolored due to exposure to the elements. Here are the steps to acid wash aluminum:

Materials needed: - Muriatic acid (also known as hydrochloric acid) - Protective gloves and eyewear - Plastic bucket or container - Water - Scrub brush or steel wool pads - Baking soda - Hose or pressure washer

Steps:

1. First, put on protective gloves and eyewear to protect yourself from the acid.

2. Mix one part muriatic acid with nine parts water in a plastic bucket or container. Be sure to add the acid to the water, not the other way around, as adding water to acid can cause a dangerous reaction.

3. Dip the scrub brush or steel wool pad into the acid solution, and scrub the aluminum surface thoroughly. If the aluminum is heavily corroded or stained, you may need to apply the acid solution more than once.

4. Rinse the aluminum surface with water to remove any remaining acid solution.

5. Neutralize the acid by sprinkling baking soda over the aluminum surface. This will help to neutralize any remaining acid and prevent further corrosion. Allow the baking soda to sit for a few minutes before rinsing the surface again with water.

6. Finally, use a hose or pressure washer to rinse the aluminum surface with clean water, removing any remaining baking soda and acid solution.

7. Allow the aluminum to air dry completely before using or applying any other treatments.

It is important to handle muriatic acid with care, as it is a powerful and potentially hazardous chemical. Always wear protective gear and follow safety precautions when working with this acid. Additionally, be sure to dispose of any unused acid solution properly, following your local guidelines for hazardous waste disposal.
