How to Avoid Getting Dengue Fever on a Mission Trip

From freem

Dengue fever is a viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes that is common in tropical and subtropical areas. If you are planning a mission trip to a region where dengue fever is prevalent, it is important to take precautions to avoid getting infected. Here are some tips to help you prevent dengue fever on your mission trip:

1. Wear protective clothing: When visiting areas where dengue is present, wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and socks. This can help reduce the amount of exposed skin and make it harder for mosquitoes to bite you.

2. Use mosquito repellent: Apply insect repellent containing DEET or other approved ingredients to any exposed skin. Apply it every few hours or as directed by the manufacturer. Be sure to bring extra repellent with you on your trip.

3. Avoid outdoor activities during peak mosquito hours: Mosquitoes that carry dengue fever are most active during the day, especially during the early morning and late afternoon. If possible, avoid outdoor activities during these times.

4. Use mosquito nets: When sleeping or resting, use mosquito nets to protect yourself from mosquito bites.

5. Eliminate mosquito breeding sites: Mosquitoes breed in standing water, so eliminate any standing water around your living area. This includes emptying any containers that collect water, such as flower pots, bird baths, and old tires.

6. Seek medical attention if you experience symptoms: Symptoms of dengue fever include high fever, severe headache, joint and muscle pain, and rash. Seek medical attention immediately if you experience these symptoms.

By taking these precautions, you can help reduce your risk of getting dengue fever on your mission trip.
