How to Be Flexible (for Children)

Teaching children flexibility can help them navigate the ups and downs of life with ease. Here are some tips on how to help children be more flexible:

1. Encourage problem-solving: When children face challenges, ask them open-ended questions that can help them brainstorm different solutions to the problem. This can help children learn to approach challenges with a flexible mindset and find new ways to solve problems.

2. Model flexibility: Children learn by example, so it's important to model flexible behavior yourself. When things don't go according to plan, talk to your child about how you are adjusting your plans and remaining flexible.

3. Create a routine with some variability: While routines can help children feel secure, it's important to build in some flexibility. For example, on weekends or days off from school, you might plan some different activities or allow children to choose what they want to do.

4. Practice mindfulness: Encourage children to take a moment to breathe and calm down when they feel frustrated or overwhelmed. Mindfulness can help children develop the self-awareness and emotional regulation skills needed to stay flexible.

5. Praise flexible behavior: When you notice your child adapting to change or taking a new perspective, be sure to praise their flexible behavior. This can help reinforce the value of flexibility and encourage them to continue practicing it.
