How to Avoid a Urinary Tract Infection or UTI
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a common bacterial infection that can occur in anyone, but are more common in women. UTIs can cause painful and frequent urination, fever, and other symptoms. However, there are steps you can take to help prevent UTIs from occurring. Here are some tips:
1. Drink plenty of fluids: Drinking water and other fluids can help flush bacteria out of your system.
2. Urinate frequently: Try to urinate as soon as you feel the need. Don't hold in urine for extended periods.
3. Wipe from front to back: After using the bathroom, always wipe from front to back to help prevent bacteria from spreading from the anus to the urethra.
4. Practice good hygiene: Keep your genital area clean and dry. Avoid using harsh soaps, sprays, or douches in the genital area.
5. Wear loose-fitting clothes: Tight-fitting clothes can trap moisture and promote the growth of bacteria. Wear loose-fitting, cotton clothing.
6. Pee before and after sex: Urinating before and after sexual activity can help flush bacteria from the urethra.
7. Avoid irritants: Some products such as spermicidal jellies, powders, and lubricated condoms can irritate the genital area and promote bacterial growth. Avoid them if possible.
8. Take showers instead of baths: Sitting in a bathtub can increase the risk of UTIs. Opt for taking showers instead.
9. Take probiotics: Some studies suggest that taking probiotics, such as lactobacillus, may help prevent UTIs.
