Adding smoke to a gas grill is a great way to enhance the flavor of your food. Here are the steps to follow:

1. Soak your wood chips: Choose the type of wood chips you want to use, such as hickory, mesquite, apple, or cherry. Soak them in water for at least 30 minutes before using them. This will help them to smolder instead of burning up too quickly.

2. Prepare the grill: Preheat your gas grill to a medium-high heat. If your grill has multiple burners, turn off one or two of them, so you can place the soaked wood chips directly on the remaining burner(s).

3. Add the wood chips: Drain the water from the soaked wood chips and place them in a smoker box or wrap them in aluminum foil. If using a smoker box, place it on the grill grates directly over the burner(s) you have left on. If using aluminum foil, make a small pouch with the chips inside and poke a few holes in it. Place the pouch on the grates over the burner(s) you have left on.

4. Close the lid: Close the lid of your gas grill to trap the smoke inside. This will help infuse your food with the smoky flavor.

5. Cook your food: Once you see smoke coming out of the grill, it's time to place your food on the grates. Cook your food as you normally would, flipping it as needed. The smoke will continue to add flavor as your food cooks.

6. Monitor the temperature: Keep an eye on the temperature of your grill and adjust it as needed to maintain a consistent heat. Remember that the smoke will add flavor, but the heat will still cook your food.

7. Enjoy your smoky meal: Once your food is fully cooked, remove it from the grill and enjoy the delicious smoky flavor!

Note: Adding too many wood chips or using them for too long can result in your food tasting too smoky or even bitter. It's important to use them in moderation and for the appropriate amount of time.
