How to Acid Wash Concrete

Acid washing concrete is a process that involves using an acid solution to remove stains, dirt, and other contaminants from the surface of the concrete. This process can be useful for cleaning up old, stained concrete surfaces and preparing them for painting or sealing. Here are the steps to acid wash concrete:

1. Gather materials and safety gear: You will need safety goggles, gloves, a respirator, a stiff bristle broom, a bucket, a garden hose, a pump sprayer, and a solution of muriatic acid and water. The muriatic acid solution should be mixed in a 1:4 ratio, with one part acid to four parts water.

2. Prepare the area: Clear the area of any furniture or objects, and cover any nearby plants or grass with plastic sheeting or a tarp to protect them from the acid solution.

3. Wet the surface: Use a garden hose to wet the concrete surface thoroughly.

4. Apply the acid solution: Using a pump sprayer, apply the muriatic acid solution evenly across the wet concrete surface. Work in small sections and avoid applying too much acid in one spot, as this can damage the concrete.

5. Scrub the surface: Use a stiff bristle broom to scrub the acid solution into the surface of the concrete. This will help loosen any dirt, stains, or other contaminants.

6. Rinse the surface: After scrubbing, rinse the surface thoroughly with a garden hose to remove the acid solution and any dirt or debris.

7. Neutralize the acid: Once the surface is rinsed, neutralize the acid solution by applying a mixture of baking soda and water to the surface. Use a clean, stiff bristle broom to work the baking soda mixture into the surface of the concrete.

8. Rinse again: After neutralizing the acid, rinse the surface thoroughly once more with a garden hose.

9. Allow to dry: Finally, allow the surface to dry completely before painting, sealing, or using it for any other purpose.

Note: Be sure to follow all safety precautions when handling muriatic acid, including wearing protective gear and working in a well-ventilated area.
