How to Avoid Chigger Bites
Chigger bites can be irritating and uncomfortable. These tiny mites are found in grassy and wooded areas and can attach themselves to your skin, causing intense itching and redness. To avoid chigger bites, follow these tips:
1. Wear protective clothing: If you plan to spend time in areas where chiggers are prevalent, wear long sleeves and pants to cover as much skin as possible. Tuck your pants into your socks to create a barrier for the chiggers.
2. Use insect repellent: Apply an insect repellent that contains at least 20% DEET to exposed skin. Reapply every few hours or as directed on the label.
3. Stay on paths: Chiggers are more commonly found in tall grass and low vegetation. Stick to cleared paths and avoid walking through dense foliage.
4. Shower after being outdoors: As soon as you come indoors, take a shower and wash your clothes to remove any chiggers that may be on your skin or clothing.
5. Use hot water: If you suspect that you have been exposed to chiggers, wash your clothes and bedding in hot water to kill any remaining mites.
6. Avoid sitting on the ground: Chiggers can easily crawl onto your skin when you sit on the ground. Use a blanket or towel as a barrier between you and the ground.
