How to Avoid Tailgaters
Dealing with tailgaters on the road can be stressful and dangerous, but there are a few things you can do to avoid them:
1. Keep a safe following distance: One of the best ways to avoid tailgaters is to maintain a safe following distance from the car in front of you. The general rule of thumb is to keep at least a two-second gap between you and the car in front of you. If you're driving in bad weather or at high speeds, increase your following distance accordingly.
2. Avoid the left lane: Tailgaters are more likely to be found in the left lane, especially on highways. Stick to the right lanes unless you need to pass another vehicle.
3. Use your mirrors: Always keep an eye on your rearview mirror and side mirrors. If you notice a car tailgating you, try to move over to let them pass.
4. Signal early: When you're preparing to turn or change lanes, make sure you signal well in advance. This will give the tailgater behind you enough time to slow down and react.
5. Don't brake check: It's tempting to hit the brakes when you have a tailgater behind you, but this can be dangerous and may cause an accident. Instead, slow down gradually and let the tailgater pass when it's safe to do so.
6. Pull over: If a tailgater is really bothering you and making you feel unsafe, pull over to the side of the road and let them pass. It's better to arrive a few minutes late than to be involved in an accident.
Remember, it's always better to stay calm and avoid confrontations with other drivers on the road. Stay safe and keep your focus on driving defensively.
