=== Assistant: Here’s the rough national average retail price of a whole fresh chicken per lb in the U.S. ===
Here’s the rough national average retail price of a whole fresh chicken (per lb) in the U.S. over the last 10 years, based on BLS “Chicken, fresh, whole, per lb. (453.6 gm), U.S. city average” (series APU0000706111). FRED<ref>{{cite web|title=FRED|url=https://fred.stlouisfed.org/data/APU0000706111|publisher=fred.stlouisfed.org|access-date=2025-12-05}}</ref>

===== Average price per pound, last 10 years (nominal dollars) =====

| Year  | Avg. price ($/lb) |
| ----- | ----------------- |
| 2016  | $1.46             |
| 2017  | $1.47             |
| 2018  | $1.50             |
| 2019  | $1.50             |
| 2020  | $1.56             |
| 2021  | $1.53             |
| 2022  | $1.80             |
| 2023  | $1.91             |
| 2024  | $2.00             |
| 2025* | $2.08             |

*2025 is the latest available annual value (through about Sept 2025) and lines up with the monthly BLS data showing around $2.06/lb in September 2025. FRED<ref>{{cite web|title=FRED|url=https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/APU0000706111|publisher=fred.stlouisfed.org|access-date=2025-12-05}}</ref>

===== What the “tracking” looks like =====
* From 2016–2019, prices were very stable, hovering around $1.46–$1.50/lb. In 2013 Dollars<ref>{{cite web|title=In 2013 Dollars|url=https://www.in2013dollars.com/Chicken/price-inflation|publisher=In 2013 Dollars|access-date=2025-12-05}}</ref>
* 2020–2021: small uptick to the mid-$1.50s, then a dip in 2021 to about $1.53. In 2013 Dollars<ref>{{cite web|title=In 2013 Dollars|url=https://www.in2013dollars.com/Chicken/price-inflation|publisher=In 2013 Dollars|access-date=2025-12-05}}</ref>
* Big jump in 2022: prices climbed to about $1.80/lb, reflecting broader food inflation (feed costs, supply chain issues, etc.). In 2013 Dollars<ref>{{cite web|title=In 2013 Dollars|url=https://www.in2013dollars.com/Chicken/price-inflation|publisher=In 2013 Dollars|access-date=2025-12-05}}</ref>
* 2023–2025: continued to rise but more slowly, reaching roughly $2.00 in 2024 and about $2.08 in 2025. In 2013 Dollars<ref>{{cite web|title=In 2013 Dollars|url=https://www.in2013dollars.com/Chicken/price-inflation|publisher=In 2013 Dollars|access-date=2025-12-05}}</ref>

Over the decade, the average price went from about $1.46 (2016) to about $2.08 (2025) — roughly a 40% nominal increase over 10 years.

If you’d like, next step I can:
* Adjust these for inflation to show “real” price changes, or
* Estimate per-bird cost using a typical 4 lb whole chicken.

: * 2025 value is from the most recent monthly data (not full-year average).

===== 📈 What the trend shows =====
* From 2016 through about 2019, prices were fairly stable in the low-$4.10–$4.25 per pound range.
* Starting 2020, the price began climbing: reaching ≈ $4.63 in 2020, ≈ $4.88 in 2021.
* A more noticeable jump in 2022 — ≈ $5.31, followed by gradual increases in 2023–2024.
* 2025 shows a sharp rise to ≈ $6.32, among the highest on record, mostly driven by broader livestock, feed-cost, and supply pressures.

===== 🔎 Context / Notes =====
* This is national average retail price for “100% beef ground beef (per lb)” as tracked by BLS / FRED. FRED<ref>{{cite web|title=FRED|url=https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/APU0000703112|publisher=fred.stlouisfed.org|access-date=2025-12-05}}</ref>
* The data reflect “unspecified quality” ground beef (not necessarily lean/extra-lean). Lean/extra-lean ground-beef tracks higher (e.g., 2025 value ≈ $8.18/lb for lean/extra-lean). FRED<ref>{{cite web|title=FRED|url=https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/APU0000703113|publisher=fred.stlouisfed.org|access-date=2025-12-05}}</ref>
* As with any average, price in your region (e.g. around Leesburg, VA) may vary depending on store, beef cut quality, promotions, and packaging.

If you like — I can also adjust these ground-beef prices for inflation (to 2025-dollars) so you see whether the “real cost” has increased or mostly tracked inflation.
