The Cholas: * built huge blue-water navies * protected merchant fleets * intervened militarily in Sri Lanka * raided the Srivijaya empire in Indonesia (1025 CE!) Why? Not for conquest β for trade routes. Tamil guilds and the Chola state were symbiotic: * the guilds made money * the state provided force and legitimacy * the merchants financed temples and royal projects * the navy enforced the safety of Tamil maritime networks This is basically a Southeast Asian Mediterranean.
