Lieutenant James Alexander Smith Halcrow, RD, RNR, was a Royal Naval Reserve officer who commanded HMS Marigold (K87), a Flower-class corvette, during World War II. Born around 1907 to Capt. Adam Halcrow and Jane Smith, he began his naval career as a Midshipman in 1926 and rose to the rank of Lieutenant by 1935. HMS Marigold was launched in September 1940 and commissioned in February 1941. Under Lt. Halcrow's command from April 25, 1942, the ship was actively involved in escort duties and rescue operations. Notably, on June 15, 1942, Marigold rescued survivors from multiple ships sunk by German U-boat U-552 west of Corunna, Spain. Tragically, on December 9, 1942, while escorting convoy MKS 3Y off Algiers, HMS Marigold was attacked by Italian Savoia-Marchetti SM.79 torpedo bombers. A single torpedo struck the ship, causing it to sink within nine minutes and resulting in the loss of Lt.
